EVIL DEAD RISE (2022) Bruce Campbell talks about how the movie is “excruciating”

Evil Dead Rise is a 2022 American horror film in which deadites return as the Necronomicon unleashes its terror on a sky rise city building.

Directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground), the Warner Bros., New Line Cinema and Ghost House Pictures production stars movie stars Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence), Morgan Davies (The End), Nell Fisher (Splendid Isolation), Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan.

Robert Tapert is producing with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell executive producing.

Deadline has reported that Mia Challis (Clickbait) is playing a character named Jessica, described as “an eighteen-year-old girl, who is obsessed with fashion and Instagram. Jessica loves to be the centre of attention, although she is smarter than she lets on.”

Plot:

A road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped Los Angeles apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

In a recent interview with BlairWitch.deBruce Campbell explained more about the movie:

“This one’s dark, this one’s pretty serious. Good, strong performances,” he said. “It’s a single mom who now has to deal with this book. These days it’s more about the book. That book gets around, that book is handed around, passed along, people try and get rid of it, they try to bury it or destroy it and they really can’t. So this book just keeps popping up, so really it’s just another story of what happens if this book appears in this particular group of people’s lives and how it intersects.”

Campbell added, “This family is not the same at the end of the movie. Well, they’re gutted, the whole family is destroyed, you know, these people get possessed – brothers and sisters, sons, daughters, you know. So yeah, it’s a family affair, this one’s a family affair. They’re all related in this one. I think that makes the possession and killing your siblings – things like that, even harder. Because in the original Evil Dead, there was only one brother/sister combo, Ash and his sister Sheryl. The rest were just friends. Now, this is all, they’re all related in this household. Much more excruciating.”

Production:

On July 14, 2021 director Lee Cronin posted on Twitter that the halfway mark has been reached, tweeting: “6 weeks. 100 rolls. 597 slates. We are half way.”

Previously, on June 6th 2021, director Lee Cronin tweeted to announce that filming had begun in New Zealand:

Press release:

“Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell – the acclaimed filmmaking team behind the iconic “Evil Dead” franchise – will reunite with horror house New Line Cinema nearly 40 years after the Studio’s landmark release of their seminal shocker for the highly anticipated next chapter in the saga, “Evil Dead Rise,” for HBO Max.

Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Alyssa Sutherland (TV’s “The Mist” and “Vikings” ) and Lily Sullivan (“Picnic at Hanging Rock,” “Jungle”), whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

With Tapert producing, and Raimi and Campbell signing on as executive producers, along with Romel Adam, John Keville and Macdara Kelleher, the new film is being written and directed by award-winning Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin, who was hand-picked to take the helm by Raimi, Tapert and Campbell after earning widespread praise from critics and fans alike for his feature directorial debut, the 2019 chiller “The Hole in the Ground.”

Said Raimi, “I’m thrilled to bring ‘Evil Dead’ back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film. The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.”

“At its core, ‘Evil Dead’ is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations,” added Campbell, whose embodiment of the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise’s reluctant hero, Ashley J. “Ash” Williams, has propelled the actor/filmmaker to international icon status across generations. “I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition.”

Said director Cronin, “The ‘Evil Dead’ movies filled my brain with terror and awe when I first saw them at nine years old. I am excited and humbled to be resurrecting the most iconic of evil forces for both the fans and a whole new generation.”

Previously, we posted that actor Bruce Campbell said that the movie is “A whole new ballgame. No more cabin in the woods.”

Campbell had told Empire magazine that producer Sam Raimi has selected Lee Cronin, who directed The Hole in the Ground, to write and helm the new movie. Cronin also directed the “13 Steps to Hell” segment from Raimi’s 50 States of Fright series on Quibi.

“It’s called Evil Dead Now,” said Campbell. “Sam handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called The Hole in the Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”

Furthermore, Campbell revealed a new generation of deadite fighters has arrived:

“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating,” Campbell enthused. “You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue
